I have 3 comps two are networked fine but I went to add the 3rd comp to the mix and it seems that windows XP will not assign it an IP address.

I have tried ipconfig /renew, ipconfig /release, and still nothing.

I even physically changed the PCI slot it is in. and stil the same thing. Under command prompt windows keeps telling me that a file is missing or not present.

I have tried switching the cables. the computer has the same workgroup name as the others, and a different computer name.

The NIC is detected by windows and installs the driver just fine. It even updated the driver to the latest one from Win Update.

Any solutions to this?

Thanks.

hub/switch/router?
what's your setup?
odie
Switch. All 3 comps are set to retrieve their own IP address. The 2 comps work like a charm, but the 3rd is pissing me off.

tried setting the ip manually on that box?

Is DHCP enabled run ipconfig / all to verify, it should be assigning an APIPA address (169.254) currently ?

Can you ping 127.0.0.1 this will show if TCP is working.

Check all the TCP-IP settings are the same as the other 2 PC's

Swap the network cables around and retry also swap the ports each computer plugs in to.

Tried all that Jas... yes I pinged 127.0.0.1 no probs.

ipconfig /all comes up with 0.0.0.0 for IP and 0.0.0.0 for Subnet Mask. and thats when it tells me a file is missing or some fruity shit like that.

I would uninstall TCP/IP and reinstall it for S&Gs

Heres a dilly of a pickle for you smarties...

I reset the TCP/IP
tried to renew IP... nothing
tried to release and then renew... again nothing

I checked the DHCP service and its stopped... tried to start it and it won't let me.

Any ideas on this?

Cheers.

Who (one of your machines or your ISP) is supposed to be providing DHCP?
If it's your ISP are you paying for more than 2 IP's? (some plans only provide 2 per account)
Have you considered a router (with NAT) instead of a switch?

Just a simple network, no internet sharing or anything...

Fixed and working... before we upgraded to our new AntiVirus software NAV left a registry entry in the DHcp regkey that shouldn't have been there after we uninstalled NAV, I deleted it and it instantly assigned an IP address to the machine after reboot.

All is well... inthe land of networking dope.png

NAV is really becoming a PoS BTW... icon_wink.gif
