Jan. 13, 2004 — Vietnam appealed Tuesday for United Nations help to contain a bird flu epidemic that has killed at least three people and a million chickens, while a smaller outbreak in Japan added to anxiety about the virus across Asia.
An infection control expert from the World Health Organization and a veterinary expert in communicable livestock diseases from the Food and Agriculture Organization were due to arrive in Vietnam by Wednesday.
"We were officially requested this morning by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to help tackle the virus," said Anton Rychener, Vietnam’s Food and Agriculture Organization representative
