I started out with (and absolutely owned) those little recorder flutes in grade school.
Before I got to junior high, I had decided I wanted to play a real instrument, so I found my grandma's clarinet. I learned how to play some basic stuff and decided to take it to band class. But when I got there, we found out it needed several hundred dollars worth of tune-up parts (pads, valve pivots, etc... needed an overhaul basically). So I settled for a rental horn... all they had was an E-flat Baritone Horn.
Played it through junior high and when I got to high school, all sorts of new things came into play. I got to play a bell-front Marching Baritone, regular Trombone, Bass Trombone, 3-valve 'Super Trombone', tried out a Mellophone (bell-front French Horn basically), and a beautiful 4-valve Yamaha Euphonium. High school was a blast for me.
On the side, I 'played' keyboards - well, learned how to imitate the tunes I wanted to anyway... never really did learn how to actually play the keys. I even sat down in front of my friend's drum set a few times and he commented on how much better my playing was after a few tries than his was after a few years. Something to look into in the future maybe.
In Air Force basic training, I joined the Drum & Bugle Corps flight and got to play a 2-valve Baritone Bugle - very cool. 4 years of Marching Band in high school made that feel right at home. Most AF basic trainees only have to participate in 2 Retreat Ceremonies and 1 Parade (Graduation)... our flight did 8 Retreats and 3 Parades - that stuff rocked!
While I was in Turkey, I bought a nice Yamaha DX-7 keyboard, but the Turks decided to keep it when I left (they packed up my stuff and kept around $6000 in electronics...). Also, when I was babysitting a friend's dog (while they were on leave in the 'States), I played around with his Fender Stratocaster... pretty damn cool, and I could make some decent sounds - again, while imitating the tunes I heard on the CD player (I 'learned' Rush's Limelight (rhythm part only), Dokken's Dream Warriors, and a couple other tunes...). Lots of fun - might pick up a guitar some day too.
I haven't played in like 16 years, but I'm tossing around the idea of buying a Euphonium and trying out for the community band. Could be fun... I just gotta find a way to make time for that too, in addition to all my other 'distractions.'
I too play mean Air instruments... but I specialize in 'Steering Wheel Drumset,' 'Dashboard Keyboards,' and Air Guitar and Bass... I could be my own band.
Sorry this was so long.
